Drilling of first LDS well completed in Wapse
Vermilion Energy started drilling the first well to the LDS gas fields from the existing Wapse site on Noordenveldweg at the end of last year. Last
From February, Vermilion Energy will start drilling for the ‘Oldelamer West’ gas field. We do this from our location Oldelamer on the Oude Maden in the municipality of Weststellingwerf. Vermilion wants to start gas extraction from the Oldelamer West gas field by drilling a side branch in one of the existing wells. That is why we will soon be more visibly present in the vicinity of the Oldelamer location.
Vermilion Energy has previously produced gas from the Oldelamer location. Natural gas was produced from the Oldelamer gas field between 1993 and 2014. Since then, both wells have been temporarily closed in and we no longer produce natural gas from this location. Vermilion wants to resume gas production by drilling a side branch from an existing well.
Before the drilling can start, the location has been prepared. This construction work will be completed before Christmas 2022. From the beginning of February 2023, we will transport the derrick and other equipment to the location in 10 to 14 days. The transport routes have been coordinated with the municipality, so that residents experience as little inconvenience as possible.
We expect to start drilling in mid-February, which will take approximately 6 to 8 weeks. During drilling we work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We do everything we can to ensure that there is as little nuisance as possible, but this is the phase where you, as a local resident, can notice or suffer the most. During our activities, an ecologist monitors nature, our activities are monitored and reports are made to the supervisor.
We expect to have finished drilling around mid-April 2023 and will collect the drilling rig and other equipment in 10 to 14 days. After that, the location will look the same as it does now. The coordinated transport routes are used again and we only transport during the day. After connecting the wells to the existing gas extraction facilities, we test the gas and also start gas production. We do this in the existing pipelines. This prevents ‘flaring’ from happening. This is kinder to the environment and prevents nuisance for you. There is no further disruption during gas production, the gas goes to Dutch households and companies via underground pipelines.
Vermilion pays attention to the environment in which we operate. For example, we have an Environmental Fund that focuses on local projects that accelerate the energy transition. Associations and foundations are welcome to submit an application to us for sustainability projects.
Vermilion is an important player in natural gas extraction in the Netherlands. Natural gas from the Netherlands is preferred to imported gas and ensures at least 30% less CO2 emissions. In addition, Dutch natural gas makes us less dependent on other countries. Vermilion produces gas in a safe and responsible manner from small fields for Dutch households and companies. Vermilion thus contributes to meeting the national energy requirement.
